Sickness Absence and Case Management
Sickness absence can have a devastating impact on productivity. Long-term sickness absence is also harmful to the affected employee and often leads to further health problems aggravated by the financial implications of being out of work. Research has consistently shown that work participation is extremely beneficial for the health and wellbeing of people and that 100% recovery is not required to return to work. Many people have chronic health conditions that can be effectively managed but they may require specific support at work. OH can help to devise effective strategies to support employees to get back into the work and to help them to stay in work whilst providing a reliable and effective level of service and attendance. This is ultimately a win-win situation for both employer and employee and there will be few employees who are so unwell that they cannot return to work.
We are focusing on employee's strengths rather than weaknesses to support employees, recognising that disabilities and health conditions are common, and that reasonable adjustments or restrictions may be required under both Disability and Health and Safety legislation.
Employment Medicals
We assess the need for support and adjustments in the workplace once the applicant has been offered a job position and a specific health condition or disability has been declared. This is particularly important where certain fitness criteria determined by statute or industry requirements need to be met. We can also help in identifying evidence-based standards that should underpin such assessments.Policy Development
Companies who do not operate robust Alcohol and Drug policies take great risks specfically if the work carried out is of a safety-critical nature. Safety-critical environments come in many flavours and may range from warehouses to software development for medical equipment, or the production of aircraft parts. Care provision also has safety-critical elements e. g. dispensing of medications and critical decision-making.Companies also benefit from effective sickness absence policies which should work hand in hand with the bespoke absence and case management solutions we provide.
There are many other areas of policy development and we are happy to discuss and review your needs at any stage.
Health Surveillance
Health surveillance is often required under specific legislation (HAVS, noise, COSHH) or under generic health and safety regulations. The aim of health surveillance is to detect the adverse effects of specific work processes at an early stage. In some cases this detection (e.g. a specific urine test to confirm the absence of detectable levels of isocyanates) establishes that no significant exposure has taken place, even before any adverse effect (airway sensitization in this example) has occurred. Companies that take Health Surveillance seriously will have a healthier workforce and avoid costly litigation.Executive Medicals
Executive Medicals are commonly seen as a great company perk. Whilst they are often compared to an MOT they are actually entirely for the benefit of the employee (more like a car service than an MOT) and come with a personal touch. We offer a comprehensive workup with an in-depth review of lifestyle- and both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. We discuss individual circumstances and consider both physical and psychological factors that have a bearing on an employee's overall health. The employee will be given a report with recommendations and suggestions to ensure good health.
